As a child, Orville was prone to mischeiviousness and once got expelled from school. One day their father brought home a toy helicopter for the boys. Orville and Wilbur played with it until it broke and then they made their own. This toy is what sparked their initial facination with the concept of flight. Both boys attended high school but neither recieved a diploma due to the family's abrupt relocation to Dayton, Ohio. Wilbur was generally a vigorous and athletic person until 1885, when he was accidentally struck in the face with a hockey stick and lost his front teeth. The injury was minor but he became withdrawn and didn't go to Yale as he had planned. Instead, he stayed at home tending to his ill mother, who was dying from tuberculosis, and reading the books in his father's library. Although he helped out his father and mother, he was dissapointed in his apparent lack of ambition. Later in LifeOrville dropped out of high school his junior year to start a printing business in 1889. With the help of his brother Wilbur, he designed and built his own printing press. Wilbur eventually got over his depression and joined the business as editor while Orville served as publisher of the weekly West Side News and then the daily Evening Item.In 1892, Orville and Wilbur gave into the bicycle craze and opened up a repair and sales shop, The Wright Cylce Company. In 1896, they started making their own brands of bicycles. InventingIn 1899, the brothers heard about people all over the world building, gliding, and dying in aircrafts. Otto Lilienthal was gliding in Germany, Samuel Langley flew an unmanned steam-powered model aircraft, and Lilienthal was killed in the plunge of his glider. That was the year that they started their experimentation with aeronautics and aviation. In 1900, they moved to Kitty Hawk, North Carolina to start thier manned gliding experiments. For a few years, the brothers experimented with gliders to get the right materials, dimensions, weight, and size. Their main inspiration for modeling the plane was birds and how they use aeronautics to fly. In 1903, they created a powered glider that Orville managed to operate for 12 seconds of stabel flight. After renovations and re-planning, in 1904, Wilbur flew for 5 minutes. They called this motored plane The Wright Flyer and it cost them less than $1000 to build it!
